Securing a Washington, DC internship is a guided and supported process within the Cal State DC Scholars Program. You will not navigate the search alone. Program staff work closely with you at every stage, from strengthening your resume to preparing for interviews.

How Do I Apply for Internships 

  1. Apply to the Cal State DC Scholars Program.
    Submit your application to be considered for participation in the program.
  2. Meet with Program Staff.
    If accepted, you will meet with program staff for individualized guidance on your resume and cover letter. A resume workshop is also provided during orientation.
  3. Finalize Your Application Materials.
    Once your resume and cover letter are approved, you will develop a targeted list of internships. The program distributes weekly internship listings to assist you in identifying opportunities.
  4. Begin Applying.
    Submit your internship applications and keep program staff informed of your progress.
  5. Prepare for Interviews.
    Receive guidance, interview preparation resources, and mock interview support to strengthen your candidacy.
  6. Secure Your Internship.
    Once you receive an offer — congratulations, you are officially a DC Scholar!

What internship options do I have?

Washington, DC offers a wide range of internship opportunities across government, nonprofit, and policy sectors. As a DC Scholar, you may pursue internships in areas such as:

  • Congressional offices in the U.S. House of Representatives or U.S. Senate
  • Federal agencies
  • Policy research organizations and think tanks
  • National nonprofit and advocacy organizations
  • Government relations and consulting firms

You will apply directly to organizations that align with your academic interests and career goals. Program staff provide guidance throughout the search process, but final hiring decisions are made by the host organization.

In addition to weekly internship listings shared by the program, you are encouraged to explore opportunities through platforms such as LinkedIn, Handshake, and Indeed. We also provide access to curated third-party internship resources at no cost to help expand your search.
