Leandro Otero

Leo OteroFor today’s #CalStateDC #15Anniversary spotlight, meet Leandro Otero a 2007 DC Scholar who interned for the USDA Office of Rural Development while in DC and is currently working for Teach for America.

Leandro’s fondest memory of Cal State DC was, “Too many to count! If I had to pick one, it would have to be attending an Illinois constituent breakfast with then presidential long-shot, Senator Barack Obama. It was such an intimate gathering with great conversations that I'll never forget.” His experience in Cal State DC helped his professional development by, “Looking back over a decade ago, I would say that this was one of my most transformational experiences I had during my time in college. I was able to gain so much insight on the Leo Otero and Barack Obamafunctions of our government and learned important lessons about relationship building and networking.”

Leandro’s advice for future Cal State DC students is, “Maximize your time in DC by attending as many happy hours and learning opportunities as possible. Lean on your peers in the program to gain access to different events/opportunities and seek out and establish strong relationships with staff members at your internship site. These are relationships that will last a long time and ones that you can leverage as you begin looking for your first role post-graduation.”

"The best feature of working in DC was the variety of tasks I was given. There was hardly a dull moment on the job and I would rarely end up doing the same thing twice. My internship far exceeded the expectations I had and I would not have changed a thing about it."
